Against the background of our close association with the West African travel industry, we have been monitoring developments in this sector for the past forty years or so. What did we observe recently? From Nigeria Airways to Virgin Nigeria Nigeria Airways ceased to exist in May 2003 - the sad end of a sad story. What followed was an attempt by the Nigerian Government to launch a new national carrier to be known as "Nigerian Eagle Airlines". This attempt failed, for reasons largely unknown to the general public. At a time when A.D.C. and other Nigerian airlines endeavoured to fill the gap, things changed dramatically as a British multi-millionaire and business tycoon, Sir Richard Branson, appeared on the scene. The co-proprietor of "Virgin Atlantic" found his way to the very top of the Nigerian Government. Shortly after, a new national carrier named "Virgin Nigeria" was launched. The airline started with a Lagos/London service and later expanded its network, operating domestic flights in Nigeria as well as regional flights to various destinations in Africa. Moreover, Dubai (UAE) was added to their network recently. Virgin Nigeria also intends to establish a direct air link between Nigeria and the USA but continental Europe does not seem to be on their mind at present.
